10 years of retreats for gbtq men

In the past 10 years we’ve been to Brandenburg, Tuscany, Central and Southern Portugal, South of France, the Stockholm Archipelago and Cornwall in the UK.

100s of men from around the world have joined these retreats, with many returning every year. These retreats have evolved into a global community of Gay Bi Trans and Queer Men who share an adventurous spirit and want to take a sacred pause from daily life.

Every year new friendships, connections, and memories are made within this community. I’m immensely proud of what we have been through together. And long may it continue into the future!

Over the years these retreats have evolved and developed. But the formula is actually very simple! We go to beautiful remote locations where we can connect to the freedom and wildness of nature and Mother Earth.

Our morning always start with ceremony and singing and a big yoga practise. We dance, we play, we swim in the ocean and the rivers and the lakes. Sometimes there is a sauna! And always a huge emphasis on fun, playfulness, joy, and pleasure.

Together we co create our journey and make the most of our time together. These retreats are designed to take you out of your comfort zone and challenge you to grow. The daily practises like yoga calm the nervous system, relax the body, awaken the spirit, helping us to come alive and bring our most authentic selves to the group.

It’s truly remarkable what is possible in the space of a few days when people come together with intention and an open heart and a curious mind.

Why for gbtq men?

Yoga Retreat Gay Men, Retreat for Gay Bi Trans Queer Men, Gay Retreat, Tom Barber Yoga

I passionately believe in the power of Gay Bi Trans Queer Men coming together to create a space of healing, growth, rest, and playfulness.

In my own life, and especially in my younger years, I found great sanctuary in these spaces and they were essential in helping me come to terms with my sexuality, make peace with my past, and to become the person I always knew I could be.

I believe there is so much wisdom and strength to be harvested from our experience of growing up GBTQ in a world that is not always welcoming or supportive.

There is a queer spirit that moves within us. It’s a spirit of authenticity, courage, vulnerability, creativity, intuition, sensitivity, and freedom.

These retreats are designed to help us discover the queer superpowers that are within each of us. They are a gift to be shared with the world.

I strongly believe that queer people have an immensely important role to play in humanity. We have the potential to live free of cultural, gender, familial and societal expectations. We can feel empowered to live deeply meaningful and authentic lives.

To do this there is often much healing to be done. Soothing the wounds of childhood and adolescence so they do not burden us as adults. To know that we are enough, we deserve love, and we belong.

I have personally chose to keep working with spaces that are inclusive of GBTQ Men. As this is what I feel most called to do. There are wonderful practitioners who organise events for all queer people with more gender diversity and who do it beautifully. For now this is not my path.

WHAT to expect on a retreat for gay bi trans queer men?

You can expect a warm welcome and a group of friendly open hearted men from around the world.

We all join a retreat with our unique personality and background and path in life.

We all have our own struggles and stresses going on in our lives.

Together we co create an experience together. My job is to guide you and meet the unique needs of each group.

We do a big morning yoga practise to wake up and start the day with intention. There is time for yourself to rest and relax and have some personal space.

We spend a lot of time in epic nature. Hiking, swimming in the sea and fresh water. We sing, we dance, we play games, we have a cabaret, we share our stories and our hearts with each other.

And we have a lot of fun! Laughter and playfulness is incredibly important and healing on retreat. We remember to find joy in life, to prioritise pleasure and to remember how precious life is, and how grateful we can be for our lives.

FAQs

  • This it totally normal and to be expected. Many of us get nervous meeting a new group of people for the first time. Especially when making the courageous and vulnerable decision to register for a retreat. These retreats are designed to challenge you and take you out of your comfort zone. This is the space in life where growth, healing, and transformation happens. You won’t be alone in feeling nervous. The daily practises like yoga and mediation help to bring us together, to trust ourselves and each other, and to be ourselves. I also get nervous meeting new groups! It’s a valuable and precious part of the experience and the journey we co create together.

  • Absolutely yes yoga beginners are welcome. Each group has a wide range of experience. With beginners and more regular students. We start the week off slow and go over the basics building a solid foundation and build the practise up over the week. I tailor the yoga sessions to the specific needs of each group and there are always pose variations available to suit every level. A retreat can be a wonderful introduction to the healing power of regular yoga practise.

  • Each group is a unique and diverse group of gay bi trans queer men from around the world. The youngest are perhaps in their 20s, most of the group are in their 30s and 40s. With GBTQ men in their 50s, 60s and 70s joining too. We recently had one man who just celebrated his 80th birthday! We have many European participants with some travelling rom America, Japan, South Africa and Canada.

  • The food is so important on these retreats! We are blessed with some incredible chefs who prepare delicious and nutritious home cooked meals for us every day. Sharing food together is one of the biggest joys on retreat. The menu is vegetarian with vegan options, we can also adjust the menu for those with allergies, intolerances, or strong dislikes.
